Terms and definitions of technology used at Kenton City Schools

Browser – A browser is the software used to access the world wide web. The official browser of KCS is Google Chrome, but Safari and Firefox are also used.

C

Chromebooks – Low cost laptops that run Google’s ChromeOS operating system. Later models can also run Android and Linux apps.

ChromeOS – The operating system that runs on Chromebooks.

Cloudprint – Google’s service for printing from Chrome. Cloudprint works anywhere there is an internet connection, allowing KCS users to print to district copiers and printers. This service has been discontinued by Google. KCS has replaced it with Papercut Mobility Print.

D

DASL – Data Acquisition for Student Learning (formerly DSL). Does not exist anymore and this term should not be used. StudentInformation (SI) is probably the term you want to use.

Firefox – An open source browser created by the Mozilla foundation.

Google Chrome – The web browser created by Google.

Google Cloudprint – See cloudprint.

GradeBook – Teachers use GradeBook to manage their class attendance, grades, assignments, etc. It is accessed at  https://gb.woco-k12.org/ and abbreviated as GB.

ITC – Information Technology Center. WOCO is our ITC. Formally called the DA-Site, which was mis-pronounced as The A Site.

Open source software – Software which has the source code available. This software is usually distributed for free.

Operating System – Every computer, phone, laptop, has software that is run when the device is turned on. This software is called the operating system, and it is required for the device to work. The operating system allows the user to launch applications and use the device. Examples of operating systems include Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.

P

Papercut – Software that manages and controls printing in the district.

ParentAccess – Used by students and parents to access student’s grades. It is abbreviated as PA and located at https://pa.woco-k12.org.

ProgressBook -Also called the ProgressBook Suite. This is the suite of applications created by Software Answers. Some of the applications in ProgressBook include StudentInformation, GradeBook, SpecialServices, and ParentAccess. Most of the time you will not use this term unless you are talking about all of the services.

SpecialServices – Manages Special Education. It is accessed at https://ss.woco-k12.org/.

StudentInformation – This is what people think of when you say DASL. It is abbreviated as SI and can be accessed at https://si.woco-k12.org/.

Web browser – See browser.

Window –

WordPressOpen source software used to build websites. WordPress is the most popular website software on the internet. Most of the websites at KCS use WordPress.
